Karen Estabrook, Pineapple Dance Studios | "Dance is part of my truest identity"

#IDANCEBECAUSE it’s part of my truest identity

Karen Estabrook // Dance Teacher and Choreographer @karenestabrook

I am so thankful that my dream came true - as a dancer, teacher and choreographer.

My highlight as a dancer was being part of Union Dance Company, where I was inspired by a number of incredible teachers.

When I started teaching, my love for dance evolved; I now support the passions of others. I truly believe that dance is for everyone. Technique is a skillset that you can develop, but dance is so much more than that – it comes from the heart. It’s not about how high your développé is, it’s about loving your leg whatever the height.

My creative process starts with the music; I’ll listen to it on repeat and absorb the energy, the vibe, the heartbeat. How do I want to express that word? How do I want to move to that rhythm?

Injury changed everything. Four years ago, I had a foot operation and it altered the entire bio-mechanics of my body. I’d spent most of my life flying around the dance studio, feeling like superwoman. I didn’t realise what a privilege that was until it was taken away from me. I’m currently going through rehabilitation, relearning how to use my muscles. Bodies are incredible, organic machines; we shouldn’t take that for granted.

Dancing isn’t about thinking, it’s about feeling – whether that emotion be joy, sadness or angst. attitude. Dance is not a choice, it’s part of who I am.

I am so fortunate to do what I love. Life doesn’t get better than that.
