Throwback to the @iabf_adultballetfestival relaxed performance evening.

I was actually more nervous about this than the show, because my dancing peers were watching (at the show, we’re all backstage putting on pointe shoes and lipstick 😁).

When I first heard this @rachelplatten song, I knew I had to dance to it. @karenestabrook helped me find the choreography “words” to express something that I think a lot of people can relate to.

I’d performed it better than this evening, but here’s to normalising the messy, the reality, the imperfect, the technically “not quite there yet”. As dancers, we’re always working towards better, stronger, cleaner. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t celebrate who we are today too.

I spent 10 years in London, and sometimes I’m guilty of taking the city for granted. I love seeing the place through tourists’ eyes, as it makes you appreciate the wonder of it all.

It was Sydney’s first visit to London - her first trip out of the States in fact - and she bravely danced around the busiest area of the entire city.

We were lucky to have the whole family along, who provided hair, wardrobe and safety assistance 😁

Her talent, especially for someone so young, is incredible. It was an honour to capture it.

True story, @taylor_spinelli actually kicked herself in the head on this shot 😮🤕

I met Taylor through @ebufferd’s @stepsonbroadway classes, where she’s one of Emily’s assistants.

To share the dance floor (virtually most of the time, occasionally literally) with a dancer like Taylor is incredible.

Don’t be fooled by those extensions - not only is her technique insane, I’ve never seen a dancer take so many risks. She never takes her experience level for granted, and always asks more of herself. She moves through space with such conviction and creativity.

Whilst my extensions may never look like that 🥲 (I’d probably need my hip removed to even try 😂) she’s taught me to push myself, to try new ways of interpreting choreography, and that it’s more than okay to fall over - in fact, it’s better to try and fall over, than play safe. That goes for all experience levels. She makes me a better dancer.

If class isn’t to take risks - and you yourself get to define what ‘risk’ means to you - then what’s the point of class 💜

My first @iabf_adultballetfestival solo 🥰 and first full length choreography 😬

Thank you @samhairwolfryder for creating such an awesome song, that captured my journey perfectly. You are so talented and sparkly ✨

One of the many wonderful parts of @iabf_adultballetfestival is getting the chance to perform on stage, regardless of age or experience level. All the dancers were so supportive of each other.

I was so excited (and relieved) to be performing in my costume, that I attempted three triple turns and fell out of every single one of them 🤣 nothing ventured, nothing gained I guess 😁. My technique wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been, but my heart was there 🥰

It was also a full-circle moment, because I had a coaching session with @karenestabrook to refine my choreography, I started my dancing journey with Karen nearly ten years ago. Her jazz classes were - and still are - inclusive, encouraging and fun. Her focus on fundamental technique helped me improve, even as an adult absolute beginner dancer. I am so grateful that I stumbled (probably literally) into her classes many years ago.
